I began as a music journalist more than 15 years ago. Within just a few years, I transitioned to advertising, cutting my teeth as a freelance copywriter for local retail clients, going door-to-door throughout the city to pick-up as much experience as I could.
Two years later, I moved from small to large projects, and found my first agency work in print campaigns for Buick, Oldsmobile, and GMC Truck. A short time after realizing that I liked the transparency of digital, I moved into projects for Microsoft, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Universal Pictures and others. Eventually, the list of projects grew to more than two dozen Fortune 500 brands, growing my skills as a conceptual copywriter, to Creative Director, to Digital Marketing Strategist.
Today, my beat is to navigate and implement big ideas and strategic decisions in the face of ambiguity, while creating and managing creative execution for projects that range from brand messaging and demand generation to user experience. I’m mostly involved in new product launches, refresh initiatives, and demand generation campaigns for start-ups, digital agencies, and Fortune 500 tech brands. About a 60/40 mix between B2B and consumer.
Personality-wise, I maintain a “beginner’s mind” for the work, and prefer a “test-and-learn” approach whenever ambiguity, performance and time are central issues. My philosophy to the work is that great ideas don’t happen without a broad sense of questioning and analysis, and a dedication to ensuring that strong marketing foundations are smartly supported with on-strategy execution.
Current interests: Mental models. Decision science. Digital transformation. Challenger brands. Narrative as a catalyst for better UX. Social networks. Holacracy. Growth hacking and demand generation. And just about anything connected to creating new experiences that bring customers closer to the brands they love.
What I’m looking for? A solid team with big goals in challenging the status quo, or an industry leader that is seeking to mitigate disruption coming from a challenger or new technology. Could be in a well-funded start-up, or in a nimble business unit that needs a Go-to strategist/writer to handle all things marketing and creative across digital and mobile to improve brand influence and drive demand.
Location: I mostly work with growth-minded clients in major markets including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Denver, Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Washington, D.C., Austin and Silicon Valley.
